when I started the flog in January 2002 there was no such thing as a blog (wikipedia says otherwise, but I did not see the name).

There were "weblogs" but I did not like the name so choose flog as an off hand remark about "logs" in general.

I considered having a .plan file like the id lot but decided I could do more with HTML.
