UPS ordered, from http://www.scan.co.uk and just in time as two more power cuts have happened since :(
As you may have noticed, I like to have a few things on the go, well I added Digital Picture frame using an old laptop and Linux to the list as well as a Soduku solver in Java script.

I am not happy and am not just talking about the current news at http://slashdot.org there have been two power cuts (at least) here in the last six days, the second one has knocked out my CDROM drive !
So the next thing I need to purchase is a UPS !
I always forget where the startup folder is for KDE.
/home/$USERNAME/.kde/Autostart
(not the capital letter of Autostart, Linux format do not want you to know that ;)

Talking about black arts, getting the CPU and system temperature from a linux box with the 2.4 kernel used to be VERY fiddly, but I just did a
apt-get install wmtemp
sensor-detect
(accepted all the defaults AND let it update /etc/modules)
then modprobed all the modules it suggested and bang I get all my temperatures from
sensors
or running the gui app wmtemp

OpenGL is a black art, but fun when you start to get a handle on it, check http://nehe.gamedev.net/data/lessons/lesson.asp?lesson=05

Forgot to mention, I took the last of the Steven King "Dark Tower" books "The Dark Tower" on holiday to read.
It is an enormous book and the only edition available at the mo is hard back so it weighs a ton, anyway I am reading along and complete page 142 to turn over and find the image from the last chapter and then a page numbered 113, skipping ahead I find all the pages from 113-142 repeated again followed by page 175 ! grrrr
luckily I had the receipt and the bookstore (waterstones) is ordering me a replacement.
I wanted to contact the publisher directly but there is no copy write page, only a list of the other Steven king books.

I have been doing various bits today including some openGL programming, surprisingly straight forward right until I get to lighting.
I had the objects in the scene Color red only they appeared flat so I add a light and BANG it is all shaded, really cool, only the color has gone.
Played with the lights and the other settings everything seemed OK, but toggling the GL_LIGHTING on and off turned the color on and off with the shading.
Turns out the call to glColor3f is ignored when using a shading model (i.e. lighting) and instead you have to use glMaterialfv, well it works now (ish).

In an unpresidented move I finally created the year 2004 summary, hopefully it will not take so long next time.

Did you know KDE has a built-in desktop rotation slide-show option ? original background image

Well I put my current background through a couple of gimp filters (15) and now once an hour my desktop background gets updated randomly, very cool.

I have been in Spain for the last 10 days on holiday. We went to the Port Aventure park/hotel.
Good fun but we got bored and cut our holiday short, got some great deals on cheap plane tickets and then got shafted on the excess baggage charges (almost doubled the ticket price !!).
I hacked the room safe as the previous occupants had not bothered to leave it ready, of course anyone who has seen Space balls the movie could have guessed the previous guests combination so may that was not such a great hack.
Finished reading "Einsteins refrigerator", great book on temperature, from hot vents under the sea supporting life and human fevers to absolute zero, super-conducting, the temperature of the sun, black holes and quantum quanta.
A very accessible read with something for everyone, and almost NO math ! (and the bit there is can be safely skipped).
I also read "Hackers Tales, stories from the electronic front line" which is fun and highly nostalgic, recommend for anyone who has had fun with computers in the last 25 years !
